Summary and Analysis
The purpose of a report is to give information from results of research and analysis on the specific issue. Reports focus on many different issues to translate information with specific data and a clear purpose. The elements a good reports should have includes; an intro that briefly describes the context of the research, the body of the discussion which presents the research in a logical and organized manner, the finish up with a conclusion restating major issues and points with a clean-cut and specific objective. The first thing you do is find your audience and come up with a fitting response. Realize the difference between a report and an essay, a report focuses on solving the problem at hand while an essay is more of a point of view on an argument.
The purpose of a review is to give spoken or written text arguing weather or not the particular set of criteria was met. A review gives the reader substantial information about the film/book/article but still leaving enough information keeping readers interested. You should ask questions like: what is the immediate overall effect of the visual? What is the overall impact? Is the piece well organized? These questions will give you a detailed evaluation of what the spoken or written text covers.
Some things I found very helpful to me in my research about reports and evaluations (review) was the wide range of possibilities report/review on and the various ways of conveying the information. Analyzing the rhetorical situation after my reading to convey a well-rounded report gave me base for what to look at like; what specific problems are presented in the argument? What kind of argument are they making? Does the conclusion appeal to ethos, logos, and pathos? (Glenn pg 162) asking certain questions about the requirements met for the report will keep the feedback less biased. When reading about evaluations (reviews) I noticed how much depth you go into about every little detail. An example would be taking a couple images and write down things you notice about them; “the way objects and people are arranged, the lighting, or a contrast in color or sizes” (Glenn pg 265). I learned that taking in every little detail while reviewing something will help you understand why things are the way they are.
Both the reports I read and watched on PED’s gave specific information about teens using PED’s more each year. I watched a report from ABC News, they stated the problem right away, then it gave the reasoning as to why teens were using PED’s (to get bigger and stronger earlier) and the risks these teens often don’t know about. They gave statistics showing the increased number of high school students using PED’s and compared it the previous years. The report was to make parents aware of kids using PED’s in high school, and the serious risks involved with taking PED’s. All of the requirements of a proper report were included in both reports on teens using PED’s more each year. The reviews I read on PED’s in sports gave good background knowledge of the history of PED’s and gave specific names to players linked to PED’s. This evaluation states all factors of using performance enhancers with little to no personal opinion. They stated the facts and let the reader decide for themselves their opinion on the subject.
After reading two reports and reviews on PED’s I have a better understanding of what is expected in each one. I now understand that reviews are based on a certain criteria needed for each evaluation, whether the spoken or written information conveys good information. A report is objective because all you do is state what is happening with facts and certain information on the subject. Letting the public decide many solutions.
