Analysis and Connection-Making

  • Some similar writing strategies of reports and reviews I noticed was they both evaluate the issue at hand, giving different views of the issue. Both a report and a review recognize an opportunity for change, voicing the opinion of the author in various ways. Both are very organized writings with no clusters and have an outline that establishes the limits of the issue while stating the main points. Some differences I noticed were how they were both laid out. A report gives information about an issue and sometimes different ways of solving the issue, while a review gives feedback, letting the author know if they certain criteria were met. Also I realized reviews don’t tell the whole story, they give enough information to draw interest but don’t give away main details. A report is the opposite, it states what is happening and why then comes up with different solutions on the issue.

  • I read a review on Transformers: age of extinction, the rhetorical situation with this review was the hype built up from the media saying how amazing the film would be and the film not pleasing fans as much as the media had said. I feel like the author chose a review over a report on the film because it didn’t meet the standards he had imagined it to be. A review allows the author to critique what he liked and didn’t like about the film, while a report would be more about what happened during the film. I read a report on climate change that talked about how climate change was something to worry about in the future, when in reality we should be worrying about it in the present. I feel like the author chose to write a report instead of a review to give an update up what’s going on with climate change. A report allows you to convey information about the subject and possible affects.

  • By writing in different genres it gives the writer different ways to arrange and shape the paper because of the requirements set for each genre. When writing a review you critique something on if it met certain requirements needed. A report allows the writer to voice concerns on the topic and possible solutions.

Writing Activities

  • I feel like there is not enough concern about young teens taking PED’s. Studies have shown that in past years the numbers of student that have tried any kind of PED’s have doubled. Parents and teachers need to sit down with these teenagers and let them know the consequences of PED’s, this will hopefully open their eyes to how serious PED’s are and the damage it will do to theirs bodies for the rest of their life.

  • There has been news broadcasts and articles about continues use of curious teens trying PED’s. I feel like it would be useful for readers to know if these evaluations have been successful. If readers see reports about teens using PED’s more and more each year, but have declined because of programs put together to spread the awareness to teens and dangers surrounding PED’s.

  • I am doing a report for my first genre prompt.

  1. The use of PED’s in teenagers is increasing every year. Studies have shown that in the past year the use of PED’s in teenagers has doubled.

  2. PED’s will stunt the growth of teens. Large doses of some PED’s will stop growth plates decreasing teen’s growth.

  3. PED’s are the new generation of physical fitness and training. Technology has advanced so much that there are tons of new PED’s every year.

  4. PED’s don’t make you a better at a particular sport.

  5. The pressure put on athletes is causing the use of PED’s to increase. Multiple athletes that have used PED’s say that they felt there was no other way to please coaches and fans.

  • I am doing a report for my second genre prompt.

    On Performance Enhancing Drugs

-Performance enhancing drugs are an issue because adults/teens are taking them without proper knowledge of the damage it does to their body. Taking PED’s means you are taking part in an illegal act to get bigger and stronger faster, but have serious side effects that will affect you for the rest of your life. People assume that taking PED’s will make them better at a sports, when in reality all they do is speed up your muscle recovery time building more muscle in shorter periods of time.

  • I am going to write a report on the increasing use of PED’s in teens. I have chosen a report because I feel I can get the attention of my readers by letting them know how serious PED’s are. PED’s should be talked about just as much as drugs and alcohol, in some ways PED’s can be more harmful them the abuse of drugs and alcohol. I feel like parents and teachers don’t understand the severity of this subject and need to be informed.
