Analyzing Proposals
A proposal offers the solution to a problem or a course of action in response to the issue. Proposals as a genre are to mediate social situations and the feedback that responds to the situation. Proposals are looked at from various viewpoints. Looking at issues from different viewpoints allow readers to weigh the pros and cons of the issue. Proposals are very common in social issues. This day and age there a numerous issues people want solved. Proposals are very similar to a position argument. Position arguments discuss the issue in depth while a proposal discusses the issue and a solution to the issue.
In the Power Broker by Robert Caro, he writes about a man named Robert Moses who spent millions of dollars improving the community, only the white community, not building anything where black people would spend most of their time outside. He talks about the Moses not spending a dime between 125th and 155th streets (the Negro community). He went on saying it wouldn’t even make a dent in Moses wallet to build a basketball hoop and court for the black community, or even a field to play in.
This sample really gave me an idea of how to organize a proposal and what it should consist of. Stating the issue in detail will really helped me get an understanding of the severity of the issue. I feel like there was a guilt trip in Robert Caro’s proposal making it hard to disagree with him.
The Diamond
Walking up to the baseball diamond with fresh cut grass, perfectly drug dirt and the buzzing of the field lights above made me feel at home. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the strong smell of juicing hot dogs and hamburgers being cooked. As I walked up the stand I heard a mother yelling “Don’t worry Josh you’ll get it next time” and the father shaking his head in disappointment. Then I sat down and started to watch the game I noticed everybody was grouped together in the stands, not interacting with anyone but there acquaintances. The man announcing the players’ had a slow raspy voice with a very low tone to it, every new batter that came to plate got a nickname from the announcer, every once in a while there would be a few laugh among the crowd.
As I sat in the stands thinking about my topic (performance enhancing drugs) I thought back to when I heard the mother encouraging her son and the father shaking his head. Could the use of PED at a young age be caused by the pressure from parents? Most athletes that have been caught in the MLB say they started juicing at a young age. Why don’t we test young athletes for PED? By testing kids at a young age it wouldn’t give them the chance to begin juicing in the first place.
